US Senators demand Pentagon probe into Starshield disruptions in Ukraine

A bipartisan group of nine U.S. senators is calling for an immediate investigation by the Department of Defense Inspector General into satellite communication disruptions in Ukraine. The lawmakers expressed concern that outages involving Starlink and Starshield services between October 12 and 14 may have compromised Ukrainian air defenses and endangered American diplomatic, military, and security personnel by hindering their ability to reach bunkers during Russian air raids.

The investigation aims to determine if Pentagon officials or contractors authorized or were aware of restrictions that affected intelligence-sharing and early-warning systems. Reports indicate that Starshield terminals used by Ukrainian forces encountered restrictions on October 14, specifically affecting platforms moving at high speeds. While some reports suggest SpaceX acknowledged restrictions at 100 mph, Senator Thom Tillis indicated the issue may stem from the Department of Defense’s Starshield systems rather than SpaceX directly.

Senators have requested that all relevant documents and correspondence between the Pentagon, SpaceX, and other U.S. institutions be preserved, with an initial report requested by November 1.
