U.S. Senators demand probe into military AI failures

Three senior U.S. senators—Mark Warner, Jack Reed, and Chris Coons—are calling for an investigation into reported failures of artificial intelligence systems within the U.S. military and intelligence operations. The senators have urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Jen Clayton to grant the Inspector General full access to investigate these incidents.

The request follows reports of AI-related errors, including an instance where an AI targeting platform allegedly used outdated geographic data during a U.S. strike in Minab, Iran. Additionally, reports suggest that AI-generated misinformation was integrated into intelligence used by Special Operations Command Pacific, resulting in the aborting of a military mission.

The senators expressed concern that oversight agencies may be prioritizing the rapid adoption of AI capabilities over proper supervision. They warned that errors in targeting and intelligence systems could lead to operational failures and undermine trust in U.S. intelligence among the public and international allies.
