US Senators introduce bill to secure Tibet's future
A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced the ‘Assuring the Future of Tibet Act’ to strengthen ties with Tibet’s government-in-exile. The legislation, introduced by Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley and Republican Senator Jim Risch, seeks to ensure that American support for Tibet remains consistent even after the 14th Dalai Lama’s lifetime.
The bill would officially recognize the Central Tibetan Administration as the legitimate representative of the Tibetan people and affirm that resolving the Tibet-China dispute is a strategic interest for the United States. It directs the US Secretary of State to engage in high-level dialogue with the Sikyong, the elected head of the administration, and other designated representatives.
Additionally, the act mandates that Washington advocate for the Central Tibetan Administration to receive observer status and equal access within the United Nations system. Co-sponsors include Senators Jacky Rosen, Todd Young, Tim Kaine, and Rick Scott. Proponents of the bill argue it is necessary to counter the influence of the Chinese Communist Party and protect Tibetan culture, religion, and language.
