US Senators threaten to block Trump nominations over Ukraine satellite access
Bipartisan US senators have warned the White House that they will block the confirmation of Donald Trump’s nominees unless the administration guarantees full access to Starlink and other satellite communications for Ukrainian forces.
The dispute centers on SpaceX’s Starlink service and its military system, Starshield. Ukrainian officials report that speed restrictions introduced in October have hindered terminal performance and drone operations, impacting Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian aerial attacks. While President Trump denied ordering any service limitations, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington did not authorize a slowdown of Starlink.
Rubio also noted that Ukraine currently lacks access to the Starshield system, despite Kyiv’s requests for its use in operations against targets within Russia. This contradicts claims from Ukrainian representatives and US lawmakers who suggest military communication capabilities have already been utilized. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Tom Tillis organized a discussion with President Volodymyr Zelensky to address these issues, with legislators calling on the Pentagon to investigate the causes of the service disruptions and the decision-making processes involved.
