U.S. Senators urge extension of Temporary Protected Status for Ukrainians

U.S. Senators are leading bipartisan efforts to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukrainians living in the United States. The initiative aims to protect approximately 101,000 Ukrainian TPS holders from being forced back into an active war zone caused by Russia’s invasion.

Senator Lisa Murkowski has joined colleagues in introducing legislation to extend the TPS designation through July 1, 2029. Additionally, a group of 30 senators, led by Senator Tammy Duckworth, has sent a letter to the Trump Administration calling for an 18-month extension and redesignation. The senators emphasized that the current situation in Ukraine remains unsafe due to ongoing armed conflict and infrastructure damage.

Proponents argue that maintaining TPS is both a humanitarian necessity and an economic benefit. Ukrainian TPS holders contribute an estimated $2.6 billion to the U.S. economy annually and provide approximately $716 million in yearly tax revenue. Lawmakers warn that terminating these protections could disrupt industries and increase costs for American consumers by removing experienced workers from the workforce.
