U.S. Senators urge release of $14 billion in stalled Taiwan arms sales
U.S. lawmakers from both parties are calling on the Trump administration to release stalled national security assistance and arms sales to Taiwan. Following a meeting between Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and Taiwan's representative to the U.S., Alexander Yui, Wicker emphasized that Washington's security commitments must be upheld in accordance with the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act.
Simultaneously, Senator Jeanne Shaheen led a group of over 20 Democratic senators in a joint statement demanding the immediate delivery of congressional-approved defense aid. This includes a $14 billion arms package that President Trump had previously placed in abeyance following a visit to Beijing. The lawmakers argue that providing these resources is essential to countering Chinese military and economic coercion and maintaining regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
