US Senators urge Rubio to intervene in Ethiopia conflict
A group of U.S. senators has called on Secretary of State Marco Rubio to intervene urgently as fighting intensifies in Ethiopia’s Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions. The lawmakers warned that the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement, brokered by the African Union, is “unraveling” and at risk of total collapse.
The senators expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation, citing a recent Ethiopian military drone strike on a truck carrying U.S.-funded food aid. They also criticized the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) for failing to honor peace commitments, specifically regarding the disarmament of forces, the undermining of the Interim Regional Administration, and the forced conscription of civilians.
Additionally, the lawmakers questioned the recent decision by the Trump administration to allow sanctions on individuals and entities linked to human rights abuses in Tigray to lapse. They urged direct American diplomatic engagement with the Ethiopian federal government and Tigrayan leadership to de-escalate tensions and prevent a wider conflict in the Horn of Africa.
