US Senators visit Albania to discuss security and rule of law

US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin conducted a strategic visit to Albania and Kosovo, focusing on regional security, NATO cooperation, and the strengthening of Euro-Atlantic ties. Accompanied by US Ambassador Eric Wendt, the senators met with various Albanian institutional leaders, including the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, who honored them with the “Commander of the Supreme Order of the Eagle” decoration.

A key component of the visit involved meetings with judicial and investigative authorities, specifically the leaders of the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) and the National Bureau of Investigation (BKH). These discussions emphasized the importance of the rule of law and anti-corruption efforts in maintaining stability in the Western Balkans.

During an engagement with the Atlantic Council, Senator Shaheen addressed the issue of youth migration in Albania. She advocated for the creation of economic opportunities and functional democratic institutions to ensure that young people feel they can build a future within their own country rather than being forced to leave due to a lack of prospects.
