U.S. Shrimp Alliance forms as Australia suspends Vietnam grapefruit imports
The U.S. Shrimp Alliance has been established to address potential import restrictions and tariffs that could impact the American seafood supply chain. With over 90% of shrimp consumed in the U.S. coming from imports, the alliance—comprising importers, distributors, and restaurants—aims to maintain affordable prices and protect approximately 500,000 jobs linked to the import supply chain. CEO Josh Zive emphasized that imported shrimp is essential to the U.S. food supply and economy, contributing an estimated $10.4 billion.
Separately, Australia has issued a six-month suspension on fresh grapefruit imports from Vietnam, effective September 15. Following inspections by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in regions such as Vinh Long, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho, officials identified several compliance issues. These include inadequate pest management records, inconsistent chlorine treatment processes at packing facilities, and gaps in traceability and biosecurity monitoring. The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is currently reviewing growing areas and packing facilities to resolve these issues and resume exports.
