US Pentagon signs multibillion‑dollar deal to triple Patriot and quadruple THAAD production
The U.S. Department of Defense has signed framework agreements with defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, valued at more than $3 billion. The contracts will expand capacity for components of the Patriot and THAAD missile‑defence systems, tripling Patriot component output and quadrupling THAAD component output. They also create a second source for solid‑fuel motors for the PAC‑3 interceptor and increase production of ignition‑safety devices. The deals allocate roughly $2 billion for the PAC‑3 motor source and $1 billion for THAAD structural components. The agreements follow a prior $58.6 billion contract that gave Lockheed Martin responsibility for Patriot production. U.S. officials say the measures address depleted stocks caused by the wars in Iran and Ukraine, where allies such as Ukraine depend on Patriot systems as their only effective defence against ballistic missiles. The United States has also supplied large quantities of weapons to partners and is using munitions in the conflict with Iran. The expanded production is intended to support both U.S. forces and allied militaries.
