Illinois and Florida roll out SNAP aid programs as federal cuts bite

Illinois has launched the Families Receiving Emergency Support for Hunger (FRESH) program, allocating $70 million to provide a one‑time $400 payment to households that lost Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The state will automatically enroll eligible families and deposit the funds onto Illinois Link cards, with the goal of assisting roughly 175,000 residents until funding runs out. Governor J.B. Pritzker blamed recent federal SNAP work‑requirement changes for the loss of benefits to about 150,000 Illinoisans.

In Florida, the Fresh Access Bucks program, which also offers food‑assistance payments, has been paused because of a funding shortage, leaving eligible residents without the expected support. The pause highlights the broader strain on state resources as federal SNAP cuts take effect.

Both states’ actions come amid nationwide adjustments to SNAP that have forced many low‑income families to seek alternative assistance, with other states such as Tennessee, Connecticut, New York, Louisiana and Arizona implementing similar measures.
