US SNAP Cuts Under Trump Leave Millions Without Aid

A year after the passage of Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which granted the top 1 % of earners about $118 billion in tax cuts, the federal reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have caused a sharp decline in benefits. More than 4 million Americans have been removed from SNAP, the steepest drop since the 1996 Clinton-era cuts, and in the 13 states reporting data, roughly 808 000 children have lost food‑assistance support.

The cuts have hit vulnerable families hard. In Arizona, a single mother of five has been waiting weeks for a new SNAP application to be processed, while in Michigan a widowed mother lost $219 a month in aid after a clerical error erased a zero from her paperwork. In Georgia, a supermarket cashier was denied Medicaid and SNAP after giving birth, despite meeting all eligibility criteria. These cases illustrate the broader impact of the legislation on low‑income households across the United States.
