US Social Security Faces Potential $500 Monthly Cuts by 2032
A report from the non‑partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget warns that the Social Security retirement trust fund is projected to be depleted by 2032. If Congress does not act, the program would be forced to reduce benefits by roughly 24%, which would translate to an average monthly loss of about $500 for recipients.
The analysis estimates that about 63 million Americans would be impacted, including roughly 4.3 million retirees in Texas who could see their checks cut by an average of $489. Nationwide, the cuts would shave off about $345 billion in benefit payouts each year, equivalent to 1.1 % of GDP, with the largest dollar losses projected for California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania. The report urges policymakers to consider reforms such as raising the retirement age, increasing taxes, or capping benefits for higher earners to restore solvency.
