US Social Security to End Paper Checks, Switch Fully to Electronic Payments in 2026

The U.S. Social Security Administration announced that, by the end of 2026, all benefit payments will be delivered electronically, ending the remaining paper‑check distribution. The move follows a federal law and Executive Order 14247 signed in March of the previous year, which required electronic disbursement starting September 30, 2025.

Beneficiaries are urged to log into the “My Social Security” portal and add bank‑account details for direct deposit, or enroll in the Direct Express prepaid debit‑card program if they lack a bank account. The Treasury estimates the shift will save millions of dollars annually, as printing a single check now costs about $3.07—roughly twenty times the cost of automated payments. The agency cites faster delivery, lower risk of loss or fraud, and overall cost efficiency. Limited exemptions are available for individuals with mental‑health challenges or those living in remote areas without banking access, who may request a waiver.

The Federal government expects the electronic system to improve payment security, reduce administrative expenses, and streamline the distribution of Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits nationwide.
