US solar manufacturers develop tandem technology to boost efficiency
US solar manufacturers are nearing a commercial rollout of tandem solar technology, which utilizes a stacked cell architecture to increase energy yields by approximately 25% compared to standard models. Companies including First Solar, Hanwha Qcells, and Tandem PV have completed technical testing and obtained necessary certifications.
This technological shift aims to allow for higher electricity output using less land and roof space. While Chinese firms are also developing tandem technology, industry representatives suggest US advancements may hold a competitive edge.
However, several obstacles remain for widespread adoption. Manufacturers must prove the long-term stability of these panels over 20 to 30 years to satisfy utility providers. Additionally, high costs, conservative procurement processes, and US political hurdles regarding federal permits for solar farms could impact the industry's ability to challenge China's current dominance in the global solar market.
