US solar module production sees rapid growth in HJT technology
Heterojunction (HJT) technology is currently the fastest-growing segment of projected solar module production capacity in the United States. While tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) and passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) are expected to maintain a combined market share of over 60%, HJT has seen significant momentum. There is currently over 15GW of announced module nameplate capacity for HJT, compared to nearly 5GW for PERC and TOPCon combined.
Recent developments include SEG Solar commissioning a 4GW HJT module assembly plant in Texas this summer. Overall, US solar module capacity is forecasted to reach nearly 100GW by 2027, with approximately 20GW of new capacity expected to be added between 2026 and 2027. While First Solar’s thin-film production is expected to lead the solar cell market with over 50% share by 2027, its share of the module market is projected to drop to 20%.
