US soldiers expose military locations via fitness apps

An investigation by Sky News has revealed that US military personnel are inadvertently sharing sensitive location data through fitness applications like Strava. The research identified over 1,300 users posting fitness activities from American military bases, often including precise timestamps, photos of facilities, and identifiable names.

These data points can expose regular routines within bases and reveal troop movements in the region. While the Pentagon has warned about the security risks of such apps since 2018 and prohibited the use of location-tracking features without permission, enforcement has been inconsistent due to low awareness among personnel.

The security implications extend beyond US forces; the investigation also noted that British soldiers have shared training data from a base in Cyprus. Experts suggest that while it cannot be definitively proven that adversaries like Iran are using this specific fitness data for military strikes, the potential for intelligence exploitation remains a significant concern.
