South Korea, the United States, and Japan will conduct the trilateral military exercise ‘Freedom Edge’ from September 7 to 11. The drills will take place in international waters east and south of Jeju Island.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the exercise is a defensive measure designed to respond to North Korean nuclear and missile threats while maintaining regional peace and stability. The multi-domain drills are expected to include maritime missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and cyber defense capabilities.

The announcement follows recent changes to military cooperation patterns. U.S. President Donald Trump recently ordered the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises to be shortened from 11 days to five, citing a desire to encourage dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Additionally, the United States reportedly cancelled the biennial Ssangyong drills due to force availability constraints linked to the war in Iran.

North Korea has previously criticized trilateral exercises, labeling them a ‘reckless show of strength.’ Despite diplomatic overtures from Washington, Pyongyang has continued missile testing and has not shown signs of reciprocating recent efforts to revive dialogue.
