US, South Korea, and Japan to hold Freedom Edge drills in September
The United States, South Korea, and Japan are scheduled to conduct the trilateral military exercise ‘Freedom Edge’ from September 7 to 11 in the international waters east and south of Jeju Island. The multi-domain drill is intended to be defensive, aiming to counter North Korean nuclear and missile threats while maintaining regional stability.
The exercise comes at a time of shifting military dynamics in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump recently ordered a substantial reduction in the scale of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) bilateral exercises between the U.S. and South Korea. Trump characterized the previous scale of these drills as ‘inappropriate and hostile’ toward North Korea and cited a desire to maintain his relationship with Kim Jong Un. Consequently, the UFS exercise was concluded several days ahead of schedule, and the Ssangyong amphibious exercise was canceled.
Despite the reduction in bilateral U.S.-South Korea drills, the trilateral security framework remains intact through the scheduled Freedom Edge exercise. South Korea’s national security adviser, Wi Sung-lac, stated that while Seoul supports Trump’s efforts to resume dialogue with Pyongyang, the country must ensure its security posture is not weakened and that it is not sidelined in diplomatic processes. The Freedom Edge drills will include maritime missile defense, air defense, anti-submarine warfare, and cyber defense.
