U.S.-South Korea relations face friction over Alaska LNG investment
Tensions have emerged between the United States and South Korea regarding the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project. While U.S. President Donald Trump announced that South Korea would invest $50 billion in the project, the South Korean government clarified that participation has not been finalized and that they intend to continue negotiations based on commercial rationality and legal requirements.
Experts suggest this discrepancy could impact broader security discussions between the two nations, including cooperation on nuclear-powered submarines. While South Korea seeks to use investment as a negotiation tool for security interests, the Trump administration appears to be linking investment and security issues more broadly.
Separately, the U.S. Department of State addressed the potential for renewed North Korea-U.S. dialogue. Spokesperson Tommy Figo stated that President Trump is willing to engage with any party if it serves U.S. national interests, provided it aligns with commitments to allies and partners. Figo emphasized that the U.S. policy regarding the complete denuclearization of North Korea remains unchanged.
