U.S. Southern Command head visits Bogotá to strengthen security ties with Colombia

U.S. Southern Command Commander General Francis L. Donovan arrived in Bogotá to meet with Colombia's new military leadership, including General Erick Rodríguez Aparicio and General Carlos Carrasquilla Gómez. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral security cooperation and coordinate efforts against narcoterrorism and organized crime. This diplomatic shift follows the inauguration of Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, signaling a closer relationship with Washington compared to the previous administration.

Colombia has recently joined the Americas Coalition Against Cartels (A3C), a regional initiative to combat drug trafficking and terrorism. The Colombian government has designated Medellín as the national headquarters for the A3C. Additionally, the U.S. has indicated plans to allocate $1 billion for security in Colombia.

In a related regional development, U.S. agencies, including the DEA and Southern Command, cooperated with Ecuadorian authorities in simultaneous operations named Factoría and Jericó. These operations targeted the criminal organizations Los Lobos and Los Choneros, resulting in 43 arrests and the seizure of approximately 2.5 tons of drugs, along with significant amounts of cash and weaponry.
