U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced a lethal kinetic strike on a low-profile vessel in the Eastern Pacific on August 23, 2026. The operation, conducted by the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere under the direction of General Francis L. Donovan, resulted in the deaths of two individuals identified by the military as “narco-terrorists.” Intelligence reportedly confirmed the vessel’s active involvement in drug trafficking along established routes.

This strike marks the first such operation in over two months, resuming a campaign known as “Operation Southern Spear” that began in September 2025. According to various reports, the campaign has involved approximately 67 strikes and resulted in at least 223 deaths. The military strategy aims to impose “total systemic friction” on drug cartels by disrupting their operations and dismantling leadership structures.

The campaign has faced significant scrutiny from human rights organizations, legal experts, and members of Congress. Critics, including Senator Tim Kaine, have raised concerns regarding the legality of these strikes, suggesting they may constitute extrajudicial killings of individuals not directly involved in criminal activity. Despite these criticisms, the Trump administration continues to pursue these maritime operations as a core component of its anti-narcotics strategy.
