U.S. military destroys Ecuadorian vessels in Pacific anti-drug campaign
U.S. Southern Command has intensified maritime operations in the Eastern Pacific, destroying at least six Ecuadorian fishing vessels since August 28. The most recent target, the Don Rufo, was intercepted and sunk after intelligence identified it as a floating refueling station for the Los Choneros criminal group, an organization designated as a terrorist group by the United States.
These operations are part of a broader strategy by the Trump administration to dismantle drug-trafficking logistics networks. U.S. officials have stated that targeting large refueling vessels is more effective than focusing on smaller smuggling boats. While the U.S. military has reported at least 227 deaths resulting from these strikes, crew members and their families have frequently denied any links to criminal organizations.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently conducting a diplomatic tour of South America, including visits to Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. During his visit to Peru, Rubio met with President Keiko Fujimori, who announced that Peru has officially joined the ‘Shield of the Americas,’ a U.S.-led coalition designed to combat transnational organized crime and drug trafficking. Rubio emphasized that while the U.S. prefers to work through regional cooperation, it maintains the capacity to act unilaterally if necessary to defeat what he described as ‘evil and despicable’ terrorist networks.
