U.S. Space Force faces proposed $71 billion budget surge

The U.S. administration has proposed a $71.3 billion budget for the U.S. Space Force for fiscal year 2027, representing a potential 120 percent increase over fiscal 2026. According to an analysis by The Aerospace Corporation, this would mark the largest proposed budget increase for any military service in 75 years.

The proposed funding consists of a $59.2 billion base request and an additional $12.1 billion that is dependent on Congress approving a separate reconciliation package. Robert Wilson, director of strategy and national security at The Aerospace Corporation’s Center for Space Policy and Strategy, noted that the concentration of these funds is notable, as more than three-quarters of the increase is directed toward specific areas.

These priority sectors include classified activities, moving-target indication, missile warning, and command and control programs. While the administration projects a budget of approximately $69.6 billion for fiscal 2028 without relying on reconciliation, the final FY2027 amount remains uncertain pending congressional action on appropriations and reconciliation bills.
