U.S. State Department Raises Travel Advisory for Saint Lucia Over Violent Crime

The U.S. Department of State elevated its advisory for Saint Lucia to Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution,” adding a new crime indicator. The warning states that violent crime—including armed robbery, assault, burglary and rape—has occurred throughout the island and notes that some U.S. citizens have been killed. Police response times are described as slower than in the United States, and petty theft, scams and overcharging are also common in tourist areas.

Travelers are advised to remain alert, avoid displaying wealth, use caution when walking or driving at night, and not physically resist if confronted by a robber. The department also recommends checking luggage for firearms or ammunition before departure and familiarising oneself with local laws and customs.

The advisory follows recent U.S. alerts for other Caribbean destinations such as the Turks and Caicos Islands and Venezuela, reflecting ongoing concerns about visitor safety in the region.
