U.S. State Department releases 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report

The United States Department of State has released its 2026 Trafficking in Persons Report, detailing the efforts of various nations to combat human trafficking.

Argentina has maintained its Tier 1 status, the highest ranking, signifying that the country fully meets minimum international standards. The report highlights increased convictions of traffickers, the establishment of the Federal Investigations Department within the Argentine Federal Police, and new protocols for detecting victims on foreign fishing vessels and at border crossings.

Guatemala remains at Tier 2, indicating it does not yet fully meet minimum standards. While the report notes an increase in prosecution and victim identification in 2025—with 81 suspects processed and 837 victims identified—significant gaps remain. Only 325 of the identified victims received government assistance, and corruption among officials continues to hinder state responses.
