US State Dept Raises Belgium Travel Advisory Over Crime, Terror Risks

The United States Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Belgium, keeping it at Level 2 – “Exercise Increased Caution.” The revision adds heightened risk indicators for petty crime, terrorism and civil unrest. Authorities warn that pickpocketing, purse snatching and vehicle theft are common in tourist areas such as Brussels’ metro, train stations and popular shopping districts. Terrorist threats include knife, vehicle and firearm attacks targeting crowds, places of worship, schools, hotels and public events.

Demonstrations have also intensified, with recent protests against education reforms and a farmer rally against an EU trade deal turning violent in Brussels. The advisory urges U.S. travelers to avoid high‑profile protest sites such as the Parliament, European Parliament, Brussels Central Station and other government buildings, to forgo wearing expensive jewelry and to remain alert to distractions. The department advises staying in well‑lit areas and keeping cash and credit cards to a minimum.

“Petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings,” the advisory states, adding that “most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing.”
