OpenAI faces US state attorneys' data request on ChatGPT usage

State attorneys general from a large coalition of U.S. states have sent a formal request to OpenAI for user data from its ChatGPT service, focusing on interactions involving minors and older adults. The request was led by New York Attorney General Letitia James and represents dozens of states seeking to assess how the AI model interacts with vulnerable groups.

OpenAI responded that it takes the concerns "seriously" and will work constructively with the officials. The company says it has already strengthened safety safeguards for under‑age users and for individuals expressing psychological distress. It reiterated that artificial intelligence is a powerful new technology and that it strives to provide its benefits responsibly.

The inquiry follows earlier actions, including a June lawsuit by the Florida attorney general against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman over alleged exposure of young users, as well as prior settlements by other tech firms with families of teen victims. In December, attorneys general from 42 states had also written to OpenAI, Google, Meta and Microsoft urging tighter quality controls and safety measures for large‑language‑model systems.
