Eastern Transportation Coalition launches multi-state bridge‑strike prevention campaign
State transportation agencies across the eastern United States have begun a coordinated public‑awareness drive titled “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right,” running from July 27 to July 31. The campaign, organized by the Eastern Transportation Coalition—a partnership of 19 states and Washington, D.C.— urges drivers of commercial trucks, rental vans, RVs, and other oversized vehicles to verify their vehicle height before crossing bridges, avoid reliance on consumer GPS apps, and heed posted clearance signs.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highlighted that the state has roughly 180 bridges with clearances below the 14‑foot federal standard, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the campaign’s expansion to 26 states and D.C., up from 16 the prior year. New York reported 310 bridge‑strike incidents in 2025 and has instituted an eight‑point violation penalty for strikes. Officials anticipate that education, enforcement and better navigation tools will reduce damage, traffic disruptions, injuries, and costly repairs.
