US States Launch Safety Campaigns for Summer's “100 Deadliest Days”

Maryland transportation and law‑enforcement officials have rolled out a statewide summer safety initiative aimed at curbing impaired, distracted and aggressive driving during the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Troopers have already removed more than 2,000 suspected impaired drivers, arrested 333 for alcohol‑related crashes, and issued roughly 1,600 speeding citations – including 350 drivers clocked at over 100 mph. The campaign emphasizes sober drivers, seat‑belt use, speed‑limit compliance and heightened vigilance around work zones and emergency vehicles.

New York officials have issued a similar warning, noting that the “100 Deadliest Days” see a sharp rise in fatal crashes, especially among teen drivers. The CDC reports teens are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash during this period, with a 30 % jump in teen deaths. Distracted driving accounts for about 60 % of teen crashes, while under‑age drunk driving contributes another 30 % increase. Authorities urge all motorists to buckle up, avoid impairment and limit distractions.
