U.S. Steel Industry Reports Strong June Shipments and Seeks Tax Abatement for Fairfield Expansion

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that U.S. steel mills shipped 8,536,500 short tons in June, a 4.8% increase from May and 8.7% higher than June 2025. Year‑to‑date shipments reached 47,527,101 short tons, up 5.3% over the same period last year. Shipments of corrosion‑resistant (CORE) sheet and strip were up 14%, hot‑rolled sheet and strip up 8%, while cold‑rolled sheet and strip remained flat.

U.S. Steel is requesting a 10‑year tax abatement for a quench‑and‑temper project at its Fairfield Works facility in Jefferson County, Alabama. The $463 million investment is expected to create 152 new jobs paying $35‑$36 an hour. The county estimates the abatement would cost $12.8 million over a decade, while the state would forgo $4.9 million, but the project could generate $18.5 million for the county’s general fund over 20 years and significant revenue for schools and the state.
