US Stock Market Breadth Declines Amid Volatility

Data from Morgan Stanley indicates a significant divergence in market performance, with 54% of Russell 3000 companies having fallen at least 20% from their June highs. While the S&P 500 has remained near record levels, this is attributed to the heavy weighting of a small number of large-cap companies. Mike Wilson of Morgan Stanley noted that the percentage of S&P 500 companies trading above their 200-day moving averages has dropped from approximately 75% to below 50%, signaling narrowing market leadership.

Market volatility has previously been triggered by policy shifts, such as the rapid correction in April 2025 following tariff announcements. In response to such choppy conditions, analysts suggest focusing on durable businesses with resilient earnings, pricing power, and long-term dividend growth, citing companies like Walmart, Realty Income, PepsiCo, and Verizon as examples of stocks built to weather economic cycles.
