U.S. stock market shows widening gap between tech leaders and broader indices
The U.S. stock market shows signs of increasing divergence despite recent highs. While the Nasdaq recently reached a new record and the S&P 500 remains near its all-time high, market breadth is declining. Currently, only 26.8 percent of S&P 500 stocks are trading above their 50-day average, and only 43.4 percent are above their 200-day average, a significant drop from 73 percent in late August.
This trend is driven by a small group of large technology companies with strong cash flows, such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Tesla, which can better withstand high interest rates. Nvidia recently reached a market valuation of $5.76 trillion.
In a related analysis of digital assets and tech, Michael Saylor noted that since August 2020, Nvidia, MicroStrategy, and Bitcoin have outperformed the rest of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ in annualized returns. Nvidia led with 65 percent, followed by MicroStrategy at 52 percent, and Bitcoin at 38 percent.
