US stocks rebound as inflation data fuels Fed rate hike expectations

US stock markets rebounded on Friday, ending a four-session losing streak despite inflation data that exceeded expectations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.98%, the S&P 500 gained 0.86%, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.96%.

August Consumer Price Index (CPI) data showed headline inflation rose 0.4% for the month and 3.4% annually. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, increased by 0.3%, slightly higher than the anticipated 0.2% forecast. These figures have increased market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike, with traders pricing in an 86% to 87% probability of a 25-basis-point increase at the upcoming meeting.

In the commodities market, crude oil prices retreated, with WTI falling 2.4% to approximately $100 per barrel. Meanwhile, Australian markets are expected to open higher, with S&P/ASX 200 futures suggesting a gain of roughly 0.2% following a significant decline the previous week.
