US stock exchanges to expand trading to 23 hours daily
Major US stock exchanges, including Nasdaq and NYSE Arca, are set to expand trading hours to approximately 23 hours a day, five days a week, starting December 6. This move aims to increase accessibility for international investors and compete with the 24/7 nature of cryptocurrency and prediction markets.
According to SEC data, night trading currently accounts for about 1% of total stock trading volume, though this segment has seen a significant 358% year-over-year increase. The new schedule will introduce a night session from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM ET, leaving only a one-hour break for system maintenance.
While the expansion offers greater flexibility, institutional investors have expressed caution regarding market quality. Analysts note concerns that reduced participation outside regular hours could lead to lower liquidity, wider bid-ask spreads, and increased price volatility.
