Strategic Petroleum Reserve hits lowest level since 1982
The United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has fallen to 293.4 million barrels, its lowest level since December 1982. This decline follows emergency releases authorized by President Trump to mitigate supply disruptions caused by the conflict with Iran and reduced shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz.
The current inventory represents approximately 41% of the reserve's 714 million barrel authorized capacity. Experts have raised concerns that continued depletion could threaten the structural integrity of the 60 underground salt caverns in Texas and Louisiana used for storage. Some energy advisors warn that dropping below 300 million barrels could physically damage these caverns, potentially hindering future emergency responses.
However, the Department of Energy has disputed these concerns, stating that the caverns remain full and that only the ratio of oil to water within them changes during the release process. The administration maintains that the SPR is being managed responsibly to stabilize markets and protect against energy shocks.
