U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve hits lowest level since 1982

The United States Department of Energy has ordered a final release of up to 40 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). This action marks the conclusion of a 172-million-barrel contribution to a coordinated global release organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to stabilize markets following the onset of military operations against Iran.

As of late September 2026, the SPR has fallen to 283.8 million barrels, its lowest inventory level since October 1982. This drawdown occurs amid surging fuel costs, with gasoline prices remaining above $4 per gallon and diesel exceeding a record $6 per gallon. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has urged European IEA member countries to fulfill their pledged oil reserve releases, noting that several have only contributed a fraction of their commitments.

Federal law prohibits non-emergency drawdowns once the SPR falls below 252.4 million barrels. While the administration has expressed intentions to replenish the reserve by approximately 200 million barrels within a year, analysts warn that repeated releases may diminish the effectiveness of the reserve as a market stabilizer.
