Strategic Petroleum Reserve hits lowest level since 1983

The United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has fallen below 300 million barrels, reaching its lowest level since January 1983. According to data from the Department of Energy, the inventory stood at 298.7 million barrels as of August 7, 2026, following a weekly decline of 6.1 million barrels.

This drawdown is largely attributed to a March 2026 decision by the Trump administration to release 172 million barrels of crude oil. The release was intended to stabilize global energy markets and mitigate price volatility caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran and disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

The current inventory represents less than half of the SPR's authorized maximum capacity of 714 million barrels. While the reserve serves as a critical buffer against supply shocks, industry analysts and government reports have raised concerns regarding the nation's ability to respond to future energy crises as levels continue to decline.
