U.S. student debt exceeds $1.7 trillion amid rising insolvency

The American student debt crisis has reached a critical point, with total debt exceeding $1.7 trillion. This figure surpasses the combined total of credit card and auto loan debt in the United States.

In 2023, the average undergraduate graduate carried approximately $37,000 in debt, though specialized fields such as medicine and law often result in liabilities exceeding $200,000. Rising insolvency rates are particularly evident in for-profit institutions.

Economic pressures are impacting both sides of the education equation: families face declining purchasing power, while employers are increasingly questioning the value of traditional degrees compared to practical certifications. Consequently, higher education institutions are facing significant stress, leading to program consolidations and the closure of small private colleges, with over 100 such institutions closing since 2016.
