US Student Loan Debt Stands at $1.7 Trillion as Reform and Forgiveness Plans Diverge
Education Secretary Linda McMahon told the House Education and Workforce Committee that 43 million Americans owe a combined $1.7 trillion in student loans. She defended the administration’s new caps on graduate borrowing for programs such as nursing, teaching and social work, arguing they will pressure universities to lower tuition. McMahon also highlighted recent changes to the FAFSA application, faster processing times, stronger identity verification and the prevention of more than $1 billion in fraudulent aid.
In a separate development, a prior administration claimed President Obama signed legislation that would forgive all federal student debt incurred within the past ten years, with forgiveness slated to begin at the end of 2016. The bill was presented as a relief for borrowers but faced criticism from private lenders such as Sallie Mae, which said it would continue to pursue high‑interest repayments.
Both proposals have drawn partisan reactions: Republicans praised the loan‑cap reforms as a return to borrower responsibility, while Democrats warned they could push students toward costly private loans and exacerbate workforce shortages.
