Excessive TV Watching Associated with Brain Atrophy in Midlife Study
A longitudinal study of approximately 1,700 adults (average age 53 at baseline) tracked participants for about 24 years. Midlife respondents reported how often they watched television and how much time they spent sitting at work. Follow‑up MRI scans in their mid‑70s revealed that individuals who frequently watched TV had reduced volumes in brain regions crucial for memory, visual processing and executive function, and showed increased white‑matter hyperintensities—markers linked to small‑vessel cerebrovascular disease and dementia risk. The structural changes were notably stronger in men than in women.
In contrast, participants whose sedentary time was spent on intellectually demanding office work did not exhibit the same negative brain changes; some even showed larger cortical volumes. The researchers emphasized that the health impact of sitting depends on the activity performed while seated, suggesting that limiting passive TV time and favoring cognitively engaging tasks may better protect brain health.
