US support for same‑sex marriage falls to 54% in new poll

A poll conducted by Economist/YouGov on July 25‑27 2026 found that 54 % of American adults say same‑sex marriage should be legal, 34 % say it should not, and 13 % are unsure. This marks a further decline from earlier surveys, with Gallup’s June poll showing support down to 65 % from a 71 % peak in 2022‑23.

Support has dropped most sharply among Republicans, falling from about 55 % in 2021‑22 to 37 % now, while Democratic support remains high at 87 %. The polls come as Justice Clarence Thomas signaled interest in revisiting the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision that legalized same‑sex marriage nationwide, suggesting the legal foundation could be challenged in the future.
