Marco Rubio pledges U.S. support for Greece-Cyprus power link
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Athens has underscored the strengthening strategic partnership between Greece and the United States. During his visit, Rubio characterized Greece as a ‘model ally’ and an ‘essential friend,’ highlighting its role as a hub for security, energy, and regional stability.
A key outcome of the diplomatic engagement involves the Great Sea Interconnector, a project designed to link the electrical grids of Greece and Cyprus to the European network. Rubio expressed U.S. commitment to the project’s success and pledged diplomatic intervention should obstacles arise. This follows previous tensions in 2024 when Turkish naval vessels reportedly interrupted seabed survey works near Kasos.
The visit also included discussions on defense cooperation, involving agreements valued at approximately $4 billion. While the diplomatic tone was positive, analysts note that the U.S. has maintained a cautious approach by not explicitly naming Turkey when discussing sensitive issues in the Eastern Mediterranean, opting instead to refer to ‘sensitive situations’ requiring diplomatic management.
