US Supreme Court allows Trump to end TPS for Haitian and Syrian migrants

The U.S. Supreme Court voted 6‑3 to overturn lower‑court rulings and permit the Trump administration to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for about 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians living in the United States. The decision clears a legal path for their deportation and sets a precedent that agencies can unilaterally end TPS without judicial review.

The court’s conservative majority argued that immigration officials have exclusive authority over TPS, while the liberal dissent warned that the ruling disregards evidence of ongoing danger in Haiti and Syria and reflects racial bias. Advocacy groups said the order threatens the lives of families and could remove roughly 200,000 Haitian workers, including 15,000 agricultural laborers, from the U.S. workforce. The opinion also signals that TPS for other countries—El Salvador, Lebanon, Sudan and Ukraine—may be revisited later this year.
