U.S. Extends Work Permits for Haitian TPS Holders and Six Other Nations

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) extended work authorizations for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders from Haiti and six other countries (Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and Myanmar) until July 24, with the latter group receiving a one‑week extension. The extensions were issued hours before the permits were set to expire, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld the Trump administration’s authority to end TPS for Haiti and Syria. About 350,000 Haitian beneficiaries and roughly 20,000 others are affected. Community leaders, state officials and labor groups warned that losing TPS could disrupt health‑care, construction, hospitality and other key sectors. Haitian TPS workers contribute an estimated $5.9 billion to the U.S. economy annually and generate $805 million in federal payroll taxes and $755 million in state and local taxes. Employers have been advised to prepare for possible terminations once the extensions lapse, while rallies in Florida, Ohio and Chicago press Congress to pass legislation that would preserve TPS protections.
