US Supreme Court ends Haiti TPS, sparking fear among Haitian communities

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that permits the Trump administration’s termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for migrants from Haiti and Syria. The decision, expected to take effect on July 27, will affect roughly 350,000 Haitians and about 6,000 Syrians who have lived and worked in the United States for years under TPS protections.

Legal experts note the ruling could also open the door to ending TPS for up to 1.3 million people from 17 countries. Haitian families across the United States reported intense anxiety: a Kentucky nurse prepared a will in case of deportation, a Florida mother described feeling breathless upon hearing the news, and community leaders in Ohio warned of financial and educational uncertainties. TPS, created in 1990 to shield nationals from countries experiencing war, disaster or civil unrest, allows legal work but does not lead to citizenship. The Biden administration had previously expanded TPS coverage, which the court’s decision now threatens to unwind.
