US Supreme Court Ends TPS for Haitians and Syrians, Threatening Over 1 Million Immigrants

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6‑3 ruling that gives the Department of Homeland Security broad authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The decision directly affects roughly 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians currently living and working in the United States and could impact hundreds of thousands of nationals from 11 additional countries.

With TPS designations revoked, work permits will expire and deportation protections will end, creating what one attorney described as “the largest dedocumentization event of people in U.S. history.” The Court’s ruling also cleared the way for the administration to resume a policy that turns away migrants at the southern border, and a separate pending case could affect birthright citizenship.

Legal challenges to the revocation are expected to be dismissed, meaning many TPS beneficiaries may face removal in the coming months, affecting communities, workplaces, and broader immigration policy.
