US Supreme Court Rejects Trump's Appeal in $77 Million Sexual Assault Verdict

On 29 May 2024 the U.S. Supreme Court denied former President Donald Trump’s request to rehear the civil sexual‑assault case brought by writer E. Jin Carroll. The denial leaves the lower‑court ruling intact, which orders Trump to pay $5 million (about $77 million KRW) in damages.

The lawsuit stems from a 1996 encounter in the fitting room of New York’s Bergdorf Goodman department store, where a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault and defamation. A separate judgment later required him to pay $83.3 million in additional damages. After the Supreme Court’s decision, Trump said he will continue to fight the case, while the New York Times called the ruling “a major blow to President Trump.”
