US Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Transgender Athletes in School Sports
The United States Supreme Court issued a 6‑3 decision on June 30, ruling that state bans on transgender athletes in women’s and girls’ sports do not violate the 14th Amendment or Title IX. The ruling involved two cases – West Virginia v. Becky Pepper‑Jackson, a high‑school athlete, and Little v. Lindsay Hecox, an Idaho college student – and affirmed the bans in West Virginia and Idaho.
The decision may affect more than 25 states with existing restrictions, including Nevada, where Governor Joe Lombardo has advocated similar legislation. Nevada previously saw its volleyball team forfeit a match after a transgender opponent was fielded, invoking a state constitutional provision that allows public universities to forfeit for gender‑identity reasons. Lombardo has pledged to protect opportunities for female athletes while seeking to codify bans at the state level.
