Trump administration asks Supreme Court to lift injunction on mail‑in voting executive order
The Trump administration filed an emergency application with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to overturn a district‑court injunction that blocks enforcement of its executive order restricting mail‑in voting. The order, signed on March 31 and titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” directs the Department of Homeland Security to compile state‑by‑state citizenship lists and requires the United States Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to voters whose names appear on those lists. Twenty‑three states and the District of Columbia sued, arguing the order exceeds presidential authority and violates the Constitution’s allocation of election‑administration power to the states. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a June 25 order blocking the order, and the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that injunction. Solicitor General John D. Sauer told the Supreme Court the injunction causes “serious irreparable harm” to the federal government and hampers efforts to promote election integrity. The Court set a deadline of August 3 for the states to file responses to the administration’s request.
